Top 10 scariest Halloween movies
|
As fall rolls around (finally), Kroger and Wal-Mart have begun the task of switching their seasonal aisle from full-fledged school supply mode to terrifyingly-bad Halloween decorations. To get in the mood for the night full of candy and cheap tricks, I've picked a few silver screen screamers that will frighten any horror flick junkie.
10. The Ring. Some might ask why this movie isn't number one on the list. The Ring, while it gave me goosebumps when I first saw it, loses much of its wow factor after the first viewing. The only part that continues to scare is the creepy kid with the sunken eyes.
9. Dawn of the Dead. Zombies. Really scary zombies. That's all you have to know.
8. Mothman Prophecies. Based on the true story of a bridge collapse in Point Pleasant, W. Va., Mothman takes a look at a chilling story of when fear meets reality. The movie won't disappoint.
7. Saw. It's the age old question - saw off my foot or die of starvation? I was surprised no one had made a movie out of this terrifying situation earlier, but thank God someone finally did. With Saw 4 making its premier this Halloween, we'll see if the film's dynasty will continue.
6. The Birds. Alfred Hitchcock is the master of fear and he does it in an artistic and meaningful way. Changing the way we view horror movies today, this classic story of birds attacking a small town makes me think it could actually happen here in Greencastle, except instead of birds, we would definitely be done in by stray cats.
5. Fallen. Though this movie hasn't been highly acclaimed, the story of a demon that has been around for thousands of years inhabiting people's bodies stands up against some of its more credited predecessors. Prepare yourself, the song "Time is on my side" will never be the same for you if you watch this movie.
4. The Shining. Every time I watch this movie (the original 1980 version, of course) I hear the words "red rum" echoing in my head for at least a week afterward. Jack Nicholson couldn't play crazy any better than he does in this classic film.
3. Seven. Put Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman together in any film and I'm hooked. This movie offers more then just star power, though. As the movie counts down through the seven deadly sins, you wonder how this could possibly end, and the movie keeps you guessing until the last moments.
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I still can't get through the whole movie without having to take long deep breaths and telling myself I'm not going to puke. In choosing to tell the audience how the movie ends within the first few minutes, the writers of this masterpiece keep tensions high and expectations low.
1. It. I still cry when I watch this movie. Maybe it's my irrational fear of clowns, or maybe it's the blood that no one can see but the children, but the movie has always frightened me and made me deathly afraid of Tim Curry. Only the sick and twisted mind of Stephen King could create such a fantastic and creepy coming-of-age story.
